Family Circus

I'm not sure that I can truly capture this for readers, but shall try.

Charles and I were reading Dr. Seuss' Hop on Pop yesterday. A page read Pat Hat Pat sat on hat. Which Charles read and then studied the illustration for a moment. He turned the page and read Pat Cat. He stopped and looked at me. "Dun, Dun, Dun" he said singing the "word" in a building suspense sort of way. And then he proceeded Pat sat on cat.

We were in the car running errands and having general conversation. Charles mentioned that he had seen someone at church who hadn't been there for a long time. "Does that guy go to another church, mom?" Charles asked. "Yup," I responded. "oh, well what church does he go to?" Charles continued. "I don't quite remember the name of it, " I answered," But it advertises as Party on Sunday."

There was silence in the car for a few moments as Charles digested this information. A look of horror crossed his face. "That is ridiculous. You do not party on Sunday. You go to church to worship God. That is a very serious time and you don't need to be having fun while you do it."

Family Circus

This morning the kids were giving me "good morning" hugs, and after Charles stepped back he said, " You know what's funny about you mom? Your arm pits always smell good."

Family Circus

Yesterday morning Charles, Oliver and Gabriel were in the nursery playing. I could hear from down the hall that Oliver was clearly antagonizing Gabriel. Charles came to his rescue. "Oliver, stop bothering Gabriel. Just leave him alone." Oliver responded "But I like to bother Gabriel". Charles sighed and replied," Oliver, if you keep on making Gabriel scream, Mom is not going to be happy. And if mom isn't happy, no one will be happy."

I have no idea where Charles got this saying, because I certainly have never said it before- that's what made it so funny!

Family Circus

This morning at breakfast Jonathan was reading to the kids from the back of a cereal box. Charles suddenly jumped up from the table, and said, " Jonathan, would you please pause your mouth because I really have to go potty!"

Family Circus

Yesterday morning at breakfast Gabriel came down and stood in the middle of the kitchen wearing a soggy diaper and a shirt. I was rushing around, throwing a load in the dryer, turning off the kettle, spooning up oatmeal and in a general hurry. Charles observed his little brother and said, " You know mom, I don't think Gabriel has been dressed yet." I responded with sarcasm," Way to use those deductive thinking skills, Charles." Charles contemplated this for a moment and then turned to Jonathan seated on the stool next to him. " I think she's mocking me," he stated. Jonathan replied in his rather good British accent, " and right you are, my good man."
